Antonio Cirino, American, 1899-1983

Pigeon Cove Harbor

Colored Pencil

Description

A wonderful signed colored pencil drawing by Antonio Cirino depicting Pigeon Cove Harbor in Rockport, Massachusetts. The scene captures the working harbor with boats, waterfront buildings, gulls, and loose, expressive linework that gives the piece a lively coastal character.

Antonio Cirino was an Italian-born American artist, educator, and designer closely associated with Providence, Rhode Island and Rockport, Massachusetts. He studied at the Rhode Island School of Design and later taught there, and he also studied with Arthur Wesley Dow at Columbia Teachers College. Cirino became especially known for New England coastal, harbor, and marine subjects, and was a founding member of the Rockport Art Association. His Rockport and Cape Ann works remain especially sought after by collectors of New England regional art.

One especially charming detail of this drawing: Cirino appears to have incorporated his own name into the composition as the name of one of the boats — a clever little artist’s wink, because apparently one signature simply wasn’t enough.

The work is signed in the lower margin and presented in a handsome gilt frame with a double mat. A lovely example for collectors of Cape Ann, Rockport, maritime, or New England regional art.
