August Brouet, French, 1872-1941
Caning Chairs
Signed etching
Description
An antique etching by French artist Auguste Brouet (1872–1941), depicting seated workers caning chairs in a street setting. The work is titled in pencil on the mount as Rempailleurs, referring to chair caners or re-seaters, and presents a finely observed genre scene of everyday labor.
Brouet was known for detailed, atmospheric etchings of urban life, figures, and working-class subjects. In this composition, seated figures gather in the shadow of an arched passageway, surrounded by worn architecture and the tools of their trade. The scene has strong tonal contrast, lively linework, and a quietly human quality — the sort of print that manages to make labor look dignified without becoming sentimental.
The etching is pencil signed at lower right, numbered 45/100, and bears an embossed stamp at the lower right margin, described in the prior listing as appearing to read “HLV Estampes.” It is presented in an older paper mat and is currently unframed.
