Mallards in a Marsh Landscape

Watercolor

Description

A delicately rendered sporting scene attributed to Gertrude L. Pew (American, 1876–1949), depicting a pair of mallards in flight over a quiet marsh landscape. The male rises with wings extended against a pale blue sky while the female descends toward the water below, surrounded by reeds, grasses, and autumnal foliage.

The composition is particularly appealing for its light, atmospheric handling. Soft passages of blue, ochre, russet, and gray create a misty wetland setting, while finer touches define the plumage of the birds and the movement of the water. The work is initialed “G.P.W.” at lower right and is presented within a decorative gilt inner frame and broad wood surround.

William Bunch Auctions & Appraisals cataloged the work in 2026 as “Attributed to Gertrude Pew (American, 1876–1949)” and described the subject as male and female mallards in a marshy landscape.

About the Artist

Gertrude L. Pew Robinson (1876–1949) was an American painter and miniaturist born in Niles, Ohio, and later active in New York City. She trained at the Cleveland School of Art, studied at the National Academy of Design in New York, and continued her education in Paris. Pew became particularly known for portrait miniatures, landscapes, and genre subjects, and continued to exhibit professionally under her maiden name after her marriage. Her portrait work included prominent American sitters, while her broader practice extended beyond miniature painting into landscapes and other figurative subjects. Works by Pew are recorded in the collections of the Pennsylvania Academy of the Fine Arts and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
