Description

A watercolor beach scene by Herbert Ward, the American Rhode Island painter, not to be confused with the British sculptor of the same name. The work depicts a lively coastal scene with figures gathered along the shore, swimmers in the water, a dog near the surf, and two seated figures in the foreground overlooking the beach. The palette is fresh and airy, with soft blues, greens, sandy ochres, and coral accents giving the scene a relaxed early-to-mid-20th-century character.

The watercolor has an appealing balance of looseness and observation: broad washes suggest sky, sea, and sand, while quick figure details bring movement and social life to the composition. It is a charming Rhode Island-associated work with coastal subject matter, decorative color, and a strong sense of period atmosphere.

Condition Description

Watercolor presents attractively overall with visible age-related wear to the framing materials. The mat shows toning, discoloration, and scattered marks. The frame has noticeable surface wear, rubbing, scuffs, abrasions, and finish loss throughout, especially along the edges and corners. The backing board shows age, staining, tape, old hardware, and general wear. Estate label is affixed to the reverse.

The watercolor itself appears bright and decorative under glass, though it has not been examined outside the frame. Please review all photographs carefully, as they form part of the condition description. Sold as found and as shown.
