Description

An original 1947 ink and watercolor by Hervé Baille (French, 1896–1974), titled on the reverse “Bain de Soleil à Paris”Sunbathing in Paris. The work depicts a leafy Parisian rooftop view, with mansard buildings, chimneys, garden greenery, and pale blue sky rendered in loose, confident ink line and soft watercolor washes.

Baille was a French painter, illustrator, printmaker, and poster designer known for lively scenes of Paris, travel, and everyday life. Born in Sète, he worked across watercolor, drawing, engraving, and commercial illustration, and became especially recognized for colorful travel posters created for Air France during the mid-20th century. His work combines assured draftsmanship with an observant, often gently humorous view of modern life, and he was also appointed an official painter of the French Navy.

A small but delightful detail appears near the lower portion of the composition: a tiny figure reclining in the sun, giving the title its meaning and lending the scene a witty, intimate charm. What first appears to be an architectural city view becomes a sly observation of private leisure tucked into the dense fabric of Paris rooftops and gardens.

The work is signed lower right “Hervé Baille” and dated 1947. The reverse is inscribed with the artist’s name, Paris, and the title “Bain de Soleil à Paris.” The backing incorporates a printed map sheet, adding another layer of visual and historical character.

A charming mid-century French work on paper with strong decorative appeal, especially for collectors of Paris views, French works on paper, architectural subjects, and intimate urban scenes.
