Jean-Frédéric Schweckler (1888–1962) was a Swiss-born painter who emigrated to the United States during the 1920s, settled in Locust Valley, New York, and later became an American citizen. A committed traveler, Schweckler painted throughout Europe and the Americas, including Mexico, Chile, Brazil, and French Guiana. Family recollections record that he traveled to South America aboard a tramp steamer in 1936 specifically to document the continent in paint; his home later included a large mural devoted to rubber production in Brazil. His landscapes are admired for their direct, painterly response to place, combining vigorous brushwork with sensitively observed regional color.
