Folies-Bergère

Etching

*Available to view in-person at Bloom Patisserie, Warwick, RI

Description

An etching by French artist Jean-Louis Forain (1852–1931), depicting figures associated with the world of the Folies-Bergère. Forain was known for his sharp observation of Parisian social life, theater, nightlife, and modern urban figures, and this work carries that sense of immediacy through loose, expressive linework and a lightly sketched composition.

The reverse retains a certificate of authenticity from Associated American Artists, New York, identifying the work as Folies Bergères by Jean-Louis Forain, medium: etching, registered no. 10221. The backing also bears a Berkshire Art Gallery stamp from Great Barrington, Massachusetts.

Forain was a French painter, printmaker, illustrator, and caricaturist closely associated with Degas and the Impressionist circle. Invited to participate in several Impressionist exhibitions, he became especially known for sharp, observant scenes of Parisian nightlife, cafés, theaters, dancers, racetracks, and later courtrooms and religious subjects. Forain also built a prominent career as a press illustrator for publications including Le Figaro, using etching, lithography, drawing, and painting to capture the social comedy and contradictions of modern Parisian life.

Presented in a gilt frame with matting, the work has a quiet theatrical quality and would suit a gallery wall, dressing area, study, or interior where a touch of Parisian atmosphere is called for.
