Description
An atmospheric etching attributed to John Mackie Falconer (1820–1903), a Scottish-born American painter, watercolorist, and printmaker who became closely associated with the 19th-century revival of etching in the United States. After immigrating to America as a teenager, he settled in New York and became known for finely observed images of old buildings, ruins, city streets, and architectural landmarks in New York, Boston, and the American South. A close associate of Hudson River School artists including Thomas Cole and Asher B. Durand, Falconer brought an antiquarian sensitivity and strong sense of atmosphere to his architectural subjects.

This work depicts a weathered rural shack set within a sparse landscape. The composition has a quiet, picturesque quality, with expressive linework, deep tonal contrast, and a strong sense of age and place. Initialed “J.M.F.” in the upper left.

The work is presented in an older mat and frame, giving the piece a subdued, antique character. Its modest scale and architectural subject make it well suited for a study, hallway, library wall, or layered gallery arrangement.

Condition Description
Condition issues are visible and should be reviewed carefully in the photographs. The etching is attached to the mats along the top and bottom edges. There is burn/discoloration to both the front mat and backing mat, with scattered foxing, general toning, and light rippling. The work remains visually appealing and presents well in its current frame, but the matting shows age and wear.
