Mogens Vantore, 1895-1977

Floral Still Life

Oil on Canvas

Description

A vivid floral still life by Danish painter Mogens Vantore depicting a tabletop arrangement of flowers, pottery vessels, a glass, and a bottle, set against a warm, softly modulated background. The composition balances decorative color with loose, expressive brushwork: red, yellow, and deep violet blossoms are arranged among green foliage, blue-and-white pottery, and transparent glass, giving the work both domestic intimacy and painterly flair. Signed lower right and presented in an ornate frame, the painting has the kind of cheerful, lived-with sophistication that makes a still life feel collected rather than merely decorative — which is a fine line, and this one does not trip over it.

Mogens Vantore — born Eric Mogens Christian Vantore in Copenhagen in 1895 — was a Danish painter associated with impressionist and post-impressionist traditions. He came from an artistic family: his father, Hans Christian Vantore, was also a painter, and Vantore later studied in Paris during the 1920s, where he absorbed the influence of Post-Impressionism, including artists connected to color, pattern, and expressive simplification. His work often includes still lifes, interiors, landscapes, and Parisian or European views, making him a natural fit for Windsor Gallery’s interest in early-to-mid 20th-century works that bridge traditional subject matter with modern painterly handling.
