Percy Thomas, British, 1846-1922
The Round Church / The Temple, London, 1897
2 etchings
Description
A pair of etchings by British artist Percy Thomas (1846–1922), a British painter and etcher who worked primarily in London. He studied at the Royal Academy Schools, became James McNeill Whistler’s first pupil, and exhibited at the Royal Academy from 1867. Elected to the Royal Society of Painter-Printmakers in 1881, Thomas became known for finely observed architectural views, landscapes, and portraits, rendered with careful line, tonal subtlety, and a strong sense of place.
These two works depict The Round Church and The Temple, London. They are pencil signed and mounted to older backing paper, with finely worked architectural detail, strong tonal contrast, and a quiet historic atmosphere.
Together, the pair evokes the layered character of old London: stone interiors, ecclesiastical architecture, shadowed passages, and the visual texture of places shaped over centuries. Their modest scale makes them especially suitable for a study, hallway, library wall, or collected interior where architectural subjects and works on paper can bring depth, history, and a sense of place.
Inscription at the bottom of Round Church reads: Published at 47 Queen’s Road and 8 Claire Street, Percy Thomas 1897 (or 1877)
